Walk On (or By) Water for The Hunger Games
You know when your fandom has made it big? When people start doing charity work in it’s name!
We’ve already talked about the amazing Harry Potter Alliance and their subsequent Hunger is Not a Game campaign, but today also marks the launch one part of the campaign: DoSomething.org’s Water Games!
The concept is simple but powerful: In District 12, Katniss must continuously hunt and scavenge to survive. In Swaziland, Africa, women walk an average of 3.75 miles (about a 3 hour trip) just to attain safe drinking water. DoSomething.org is challenging teens to register a team, map out a route, and walk that same distance in solidarity for those affected by water scarcity.
If 15,000 walkers register for these water walks, DoSomething.Org will work with The Thirst Project to build a well in Swaziland.
It may seem like a lot of work, but is it really? Let’s break it down!
1. Ask your friends to go for a walk. Officially register for said walk on The Water Games page.
2. Find a good place to walk for 3.75 miles– a track, boulevard, a main street.
Of course, you can do much more than that! You can advertise your walk, dress up, make videos, or run a food drive as part of the event. Believe it or not, doing charity can be a lot of fun!
Did we mention that there’s also awesome prizes? Every teen who participates will be entered for a chance to win a $2,000 scholarship! There’s also various awards for different categories: visuals, promotion, distance and use of an adult, for instance! The grand prize of them all is the Katniss Walk award for biggest team, for which 5 team members will win a trip to the DoSomething Awards in LA!
So while we’re all rocking out and enjoy the most fantastical Hunger Games week EVER, let’s take some time to do some good for others too!
